The time has come to reveal the best and worst of Britain’s eateries according to Where’s Good to Eat? reviewers.

WGTE was trialled first in the Isle of Man before becoming a nationwide site, so establishments there have understandably received more comments, good and bad, and have been assessed separately for that reason.

Haneffe-s.jpgIn the Isle of Man the most popular establishment overall was easily Haneffes, followed closely by The Creek Inn- both in the Pubs/Bars category. Getting the lowest rating in that category (calculated in every case by the number of ‘not recommended’ or just ‘OK’ comments) were The Waterfall, followed by The Marine. But, as for every establishment, to get the full picture all the comments should be read. Negative comments have often pinpointed shortcomings which have subsequently been rectified by the proprietors, the ratings consequently improving. So all results and comments must be viewed in context, rather than be taken as a continuing situation.

In the Pubs/Bars category for the rest of Britain, the South coast did very well, with the top-rated being The Cowherds in Southampton, followed by Jolly Jacks in Plymouth; the most criticism being aimed at The Golden Pheasant in Peterborough, Just Desserts in Hitchin and Baa Bar in Nottingham.

The Manx Restaurants Views and Cacio & Pepe came out top in their category, with The Sound and The Old Courthouse receiving the most criticism.

In the rest of Britain there was a tie at the top between Bistro Live Milton Keynes, Banana Wharf Southampton, and Café Rouge and Smith & Western both in Chichester. There was a tie also at the other end of the scale, with Chloes Plymouth, Ask Stevenage and China One Nottingham, all getting the most negative comments.

IOM-Airport.jpgHowever, the booby prize for the highest number of negative comments posted on the entire site must go to the Isle of Man Airport Restaurant which, despite its name, comes into the café section. Not far behind in this dubious honour comes the Manx Costa Coffee , with one over-riding element being the object of every criticism. Top Manx café is Carines, followed by The Velvet Lobster.

starbucks.pngDifferent Starbucks come out at both the top and the bottom of the UK Café list – the Southampton branch being well recommended (Halladays Tea Rooms actually beating them to the top spot) and the Baldock branch not so.

In the final category, The Boathouse was the Isle of Man’s most highly recommended Take Away, but has now sadly closed, so Port Jack Chippy , also scoring extremely well, now takes the top spot. At the other end of the scale Tuckers and KFC fare the worst.

KFC in Baldock and Stevenage also get poor ratings, as do Pizza Hut Nottingham, with Hong Kong Cantonese Meals of Burnley topping the UK poll of recommended Take-Aways.

As mentioned before, this is simply a snapshot of the story so far, and ratings can easily and quickly change as proprietors respond to what they read, and reviewers place new comments. Whether you agree or disagree with any results or any comments made, have your own say about what is wrong or what is right about any establishment in Britain. Your comments can and do make a difference!
