Where's Good to Eat?

The Bluebell

High St, Glinton, Peterborough PE6 7LS

Secretdinerlogo1lg.jpgThe Bluebell is a pub with a restaurant in the village of Glinton. The last time we ate there was for a Christmas get-together in December 2010 when, considering there was a party of 20+, the food was quite good.

This time four of went for dinner on a Thursday evening. We received a very warm welcome from the bar staff. Having ordered our drinks we were asked if we would like to go straight to our table or sit in the bar and look at the menus. We chose to go to our table with our drinks.

The bar and dining room are very pleasant with a cosy atmosphere.

As we arrived shortly before 7.00pm we could have chosen from the 2-for-a-tenner menu, but the choice was quite limited and we wanted the choice of three courses.

Two of us shared Black Pudding and Smoked bacon salad (£7.45) which was very tasty. It was offered as a light snack, but they happily brought us two plates so we could share. My husband chose garlic mushrooms (£4.75) which came in lashings of garlic butter sitting on French bread. It was tasty but he’d have preferred a few more mushrooms. Our friend had Kings Prawns in batter with salad, which were very light and tasty.

We all had something different for mains. One had pork steak with a stilton crust. The pork was quite thick and rather overdone, making it a bit tough. Another had pork steak in a sauce, but would have liked more sauce. We asked if it should have potatoes with it and they appeared a couple of minutes later. My husband had steak and ale pie with chips, which was good. I had salmon on sauté potatoes with basil oil, which, like the pork, was rather over-cooked and disappointing. The vegetables were nicely cooked.

There was only a choice of 5 puddings, but again we all had something different. Treacle sponge and custard – which was good, profiteroles with too much cream and not enough chocolate sauce, apple pie & custard – which was good and white chocolate tart with raspberries and ice cream – which was very tasty.

The cappucinos and espresso were very good.

We had two bottles of the house white wine, which was a Sauvignon Blanc and at £12.75 very good for the money.

Although the food could have been better, the service was excellent. Friendly banter and efficient staff who were there when required but unseen the rest of the time.

If the food was less overcooked it would have been a very good experience. As it was, we all had a good night, thanks to the waiting staff being efficient and fun.
