The Village Bakery

The Village Bakery aims to be the most inspirational organic bakery brand in Britain, making artisan products that balance great taste with nutritional thoughtfulness, environmental responsibility and fair dealing with people near and far.

Founded in 1976, not by a baker but by a visionary with principles about how good food should be made, The Village Bakery has always been at the forefront of the organic movement. Making its reputation by swimming against the tide of the use of additives and preservatives in mass produced bread and cakes, it uses natural processes, artisan methods and interesting ingredients to make its award-winning ranges.

It is a brand which has stuck to its original principles throughout the decades and has developed a growing and particularly loyal following. The Village Bakery is a success story of a real village bakery - founded in the foothills of the Pennines in an unspoilt area of rural Cumbria - which has gone on to become one of the leading and most respected organic bakery brands in the UK.

VB-Rye.jpgIncluding rye bread in your daily diet helps to support healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. Because it is 100% wheat free it can also help alleviate bloating and discomfort helping you feel generally better on a daily basis. Furthermore it has 4 times the fibre and 20% less calories than standard white sliced bread.

Dr. Sarah Brewer says: “Eating rye bread helps to increase satiety – feelings of fullness – to suppress hunger and the desire to eat. Including rye bread in your breakfast will help to reduce your appetite before lunch and this effect will continue into the afternoon, helping to curb mid-morning and mid-afternoon cravings, so you eat less overall.”

Currently The Village Bakery it is challenging people to “Try Rye” – so I did!

And I found it very tasty, plus I can verify that it definitely keeps you feeling satisfied for a good long time. After three slices for breakfast, I went way past lunchtime without realizing it, and without feeling at all peckish – a big plus. My only problem is that for me it could never be a true substitute for the traditional loaf. My sandwiches and toast were not as successful using rye bread. Of course you can try both and they are pleasant – but a totally different thing. I would say that sandwiches are best of the open variety, and toast is OK but the butter doesn’t soak in. However, having said all this, the dense and rather dry rye bread was very pleasant, an enjoyable change, and would be hugely useful for any nibblers who are wanting to lose weight and anyone who finds ordinary bread bloating. I thoroughly recommend giving it a try.
